Hump - The Fabulous Penetrators
Gee willikers mister, this here rock and roll music sure gets you all gee'd up. I think I'm going to go find little Susy and take a look up her skirts.

The Boyfriend Song (Tuckshop Session) - The Momeraths
As a hetero-sexual man, I never really wanted a boyfriend, that is until I heard this song. The Momeraths make having a boyfriend sound like ever-so-much fun, I think I'll get two!

Roll the Dice - Sara Schiralli
When it comes to Sara Schiralli the beauty is all in the delivery. So devilishly does she sing her tunes that one could imagine her luring sailors to a watery death somewhere far from the fields of Troy.

Android with a Heart (session) - The Hornblower Brothers
Why, ain't that the jolliest (and most violent) song you've heard in a while?

Rainbow (session) - Gabriel Burne
My, my, my, ain't that just the quaintest sound that you've heard in many a bygone year? Melodica ain't hamming it up here, they are genuinely this pleasant all the time. Who said banjo picking and harmonising weren't cool anymore?

Fisherman (session) - Melodica, Melody and Me
My, my, my, ain't that just the quaintest sound that you've heard in many a bygone year? Melodica ain't hamming it up here, they are genuinely this pleasant all the time. Who said banjo picking and harmonising weren't cool anymore?

China White Doll - Captive State
The boys from Captive State have a serious side to them, as is evidenced in their gem of a track 'China White Doll', from their debut 'Elmore Grove EP' which combines the soulful vocals of Shearwater with the mastery of dynamics and orchestration of Sufjan Stevens and the driving rock beat of Midlake...

The Best of Club Ugly: The First Two Years

It was cold and wet outside The Luminaire in Kilburn on the night of January 24th 2007. Inside under the slowly turning disco ball something truly lovely was happening. The Southern Tenant Folk Union and The Zetland Players were launching their debut album and EP respectively, Scroobius Pip and Fanfarlo were wowing the crowds, and Club Ugly was immaculately conceived.
As we look forward to Club Ugly's rebirth at The Social on January 6th, below are some highlights of the gigs held so far.

Blackjack David - Southern Tenant Folk Union
Pat McGarvey's Southern Tenant Folk Union have made a name for themselves as one of the most consistently enjoyable, soulful and authentic acts on the UK folk circuit. This live recording of 'Blackjack David' captures some of that magic in a wonderfully jaunty manner...

Sadness - Mohanski
Perhaps the most laid-back and chilled-out act ever to grace the Club Ugly stage. The group are all talented musicians playing a variety of guitars, organs and percussion and together they make music that sounds like the best of brit-pop, psychedelia and folk-hop all rolled into one.

Love Is Vanishing - The Cellophane Flowers
Trying to define the ever-evolving sound of The Cellophane Flowers is difficult. Even when on stage at Club Ugly one is never sure whether these guys sound more like the Cocteau Twins, Fleetwood Mac or something very post-grunge. Eventually it is better to stop worrying and just let the swirling noise surround you. The track below is perhaps the band on a lighter day, pared down and affecting...

Empty Threats and Recurring Themes - Ali Whitton
Sometimes it is alright to me mopey, fun to melancholic, and pleasant to be plaintive. At times like these it is useful to have on stage young men such as Ali Whitton who is sensational at being sorrowful and much better looking than dumb old Conor Oberst.
